We had an incredible time touring the Homestead and grounds. Our guide, Pete, asked what our interests were and tailored his tour to us. We loved learning about the architecture, family, and viewing props from the show. He was very knowledgeable about the provenance of items and the creation of the museum.
We were also fortunate to attend a free panel that day which was part of the Tell It Slant poetry festival and featured the costume designer and actors who played Lavinia and Austin in the Apple show Dickinson.
The museum is a wonderful steward of their historic homes and beautifully marry the history of the family with modern interests.
I visited my friends in Boston last month & we drove out to Amherst to check out the Emily Dickinson Museum! We loved it!! ♥️ We had a guided tour with Anna, who was super knowledgeable and patient with questions from our small group. I enjoyed learning about the poet and there was even a room set up for the guided tours to discuss some of her works via the boards with the sliders (didn't get a pic of them). 📝 We walked through the house and I think my two favorite rooms are the foyer and the salon/living room with the portrait replica of Dickinson and her siblings. 👨👩👧 There is a little souvenir shop of course where you can purchase things like booklets of Dickinson's poems, shirts, stationery, umbrellas, etc. I'm glad we came to visit this museum, it was an educational, laid-back experience. We also saw the giant tree outside the house that has been there since Dickinson's time! 🌳 This is a must-see destination for literary fans.
Loved visiting the Emily Dickinson museum! The staff was very knowledgeable and the experience was fantastic! As an English teacher, can't wait to share this with my students.
We got the guided tour and it was amazing. The house is beautiful and the tour guide quoted a lot of Emily's poetry. It's not really a handicapped accessible as there are two floors, but if you can climb stairs I highly recommend this place.
This museum is amazing! My girlfriend and I have wanted to come for about 2 years now and I’m so glad we finally did!
Our tour guide was Emma and she was great! She was able to answer any questions we had. Parking was easy and there are signs that tell you exactly where to go to start your tour. The gift shop was full of great stuff too.
We walked about 10-15 minutes to the cemetery where Emily is buried which was an added on bonus! I can’t wait to come back!!
Amazing place. Had a fantastic time seeing the period-perfect, well-restored, and wonderfully maintained home of an iconic American. The staff were awesome, particularly our guide, Thackeray. Will definitely return!
This was an enjoyable and interesting tour. Our guide gave us many new insights into Emily Dickinson’s life, but of particular interest was her retention of alternative wording during the writing process, signalled by the use of plus signs in the text.
I think most of us will re-read Dickinson with greater commitment, understanding and appreciation as a result of this visit.
I recently had the pleasure of visiting the Emily Dickinson Museum in Amherst, and I have to say it was a really wonderful visit. My husband and I explored the museum last week. Upon arriving at the museum, we joined one of the organized tour groups, and our tour guide, surprisingly named Emily, led us through The Homestead, where Emily Dickinson lived most of her The tour guide’s knowledge and passion for Emily Dickinson’s life and work was immediate. She walked the group through each room, providing fascinating insights into how the space affects and affects Emily’s life and poetry.
What stood out about the trip was that it was not just a fact lesson, but an immersive experience in the world of Emily Dickinson. The director not only told the story of Emily’s life but explored the poetic talent behind her unique writing style. Understanding the context and inspiration behind Emily’s poetry gave us a deeper appreciation of her literary contributions. On our way to the house, our guide, whose name was Emily...!! read some of Emily’s poetry, weaving it neatly into the story of Emily’s life. It made the trip feel personal and emotional. Each room had its own story, and the director’s history telling skills made it memorable and satisfying. If you find yourself in Amherst, a visit to the Emily Dickinson Museum is undoubtedly worth your time. It's a tribute to a remarkable poet and a glimpse into the heart and soul of one of America's literary treasures.
